Silent Snow

An Inuit search for solutions to the chemical poisoning of the world

A film by Jan van den Berg en Pipaluk Knudsen-Ostermann

A silent assassin is destroying the Inuit community in Greenland. Chemical residues from all over the world accumulate here invisibly, poisoning humans and animals. Via currents in the ocean and attached to snow, pesticides are carried northbound into Inuit land, causing illness and infertility. Silent Snow is a documentary project investigating, together with the people who are affected the most, what turns out to be a structural pollution of the entire global environmental system.

In the film Pipaluk Knudsen-Ostermann, a young Inuit women, travels around the world looking for the causes and world wide dillemmas of this problem. Pipaluk: “Our life is threatened by dangerous pesticides. As a young woman who would like to have a child in the future, I was very worried and wanted to make this film in order to search for answers and solutions”.

Jan van den Berg: “The discrepancy between the magnificence of this seemingly untouched white land and the steady but invisible destruction of this area by developments elsewhere in the world is the essential drama I wished to capture.
